Event Details

This full day workshop has been specifically designed for teachers and other educational practitioners working with children with severe or multiple and profound learning difficulties.
Workshop facilitator Les Staves is a trainer and author with long teaching experience and an international reputation. His training sessions, which are often described as inspirational, always contain direct examples of children working. His new book Very Special Maths is to be published this autumn.

This course is a rare chance to explore Very Special Literacy and Maths together. During the session, participants will look at what ‘literacy’ and ‘maths’ are for children who may be working towards level one for many years. It will explore how both these aspects of learning enable children to observe, share and use information about their surroundings and occurrences in their lives. It sets the conventional curriculum strands of maths and literacy into relevant contexts for very special pupils.

The day’s programme includes:

The roots of Maths including
· The sensory beginnings of mathematics
· Engaging children in understanding their world.
· The development of practical mathematical thinking
· The processes of learning to count

The roots of language and literacy including
· Working towards language and other forms of communication
· The roots and growth of reading and writing
· Participating in relevant forms of reading and writing
· The development of thinking

Most importantly the sessions include lots of ideas for resources and teaching practises for very special children of all ages who are still working from sensory beginnings towards the levels of the conventional curriculum.

This full day course costs £100 and includes lunch – you will receive an invoice following confirmation of your place on the programme. Places are limited so please book early to avoid disappointment.
